U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Mauritius
45th Session of the UPR Working Group
As Delivered by Tim Johnson
Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
The United States welcomes the delegation from Mauritius led by the Honorable Mr. Maneesh Gobin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade.
We commend Mauritius for its efforts to investigate alleged financial crimes, police misconduct, and other criminal activity and we encourage consistent and timely law enforcement actions based on the outcomes of the investigations. We applaud Mauritius for strengthening legal protections for trafficking victims and persons with disabilities and for decriminalizing consensual same-sex conduct.
In the spirit of constructive engagement, we recommend that Mauritius:
- Enforce laws penalizing corruption and reduce lengthy delays in corruption cases going to trial.
- Take steps to promote accountability for abuses perpetrated by police, security forces, and other officials.
- Finalize the passage of and implement a comprehensive law protecting the rights of persons with disabilities to ensure they are protected equally under the law.
I thank you.
