U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Germany
44th Session
Delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States welcomes the delegation from Germany led by Commissioner Amtsberg.
We commend Germany’s commitment to promoting democracy and human rights at home and abroad and committed engagement on the Human Rights Council. In the spirit of cooperation, we recommend that Germany:
- Investigate and prosecute those responsible for violence against members of marginalized groups, including violence based on race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics.
- Increase the integration of persons with disabilities into society, including placing children into mainstream schools and recreational activities where they can learn the same curriculum as their nondisabled peers, and provide better access to employment, mobility, and essential services for all ages.
- Investigate and prosecute those responsible for attacks against journalists and collect disaggregated data on such acts to design policies that address them most effectively.
We wish Germany a successful review. I thank you.
