Interactive Dialogue on the Interim Oral Update of HC on the Situation of Human Rights in Belarus

Human Rights Council – 54th Session

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

As Delivered by Kelly Billingsley

Thank you, Mr. President.

The United States strongly condemns the Belarusian authorities’ campaign of violence and repression against pro-democracy activists since the fraudulent 2020 presidential election.

Three years into this systematic crackdown, authorities have prosecuted more than 4,300 persons on politically motivated grounds, shuttered nearly all independent media, declared many independent outlets “extremist” organizations, forced the shutdown of nearly all independent NGOs and political parties in the country, and enacted legislation aimed at maintaining Lukashenka’s complete grip on power.

We deplore the unjust detention of 1,500 political prisoners, many incommunicado, deliberately held in deplorable conditions and denied necessary medical care.

Inhumane treatment led to the deaths in prison of Mikalai Klimovich and Ales Pushkin after authorities failed to allow emergency medical attention.

We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners in Belarus.

Madam Deputy High Commissioner, how can we ensure Belarusian authorities uphold their international obligations regarding the appropriate treatment of prisoners?

I thank you.
