Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert on the Enjoyment of All Human Rights by Older Persons Claudia Mahler

Human Rights Council – 54th Session

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

As Delivered by Jeffrey Regner

Thank you, Mr. President.

Thank you, Independent Expert Mahler. We welcome your report and share your concerns about violence against and abuse and neglect of older persons.

We also appreciate your efforts to draw attention to the intersection between ageing and gender, including in data collection and research analysis, which give more visibility to older women in human rights frameworks and mechanisms.

The United States has invested more than $430 million to strengthen Adult Protective Services in the United States. These services help to investigate reports of elder abuse, and they provide services to empower survivors to recover from the experience of abuse.

In addition, in April, President Biden signed an Executive Order on Increasing Access to High-Quality Care and Supporting Caregivers, making long-term care more accessible for families; supporting family caregivers shouldering immense responsibility; and improving job quality for home care workers and staff at nursing homes.

Our government is also supporting U.S. local law enforcement agencies in training international partners to help them investigate crimes against older adults and provide assistance to victims.

What actions can we take to increase access to information regarding abuse against older persons?

I thank you.
