Joint Statement on behalf of the Core Group of the Resolution on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association

As Delivered by the Czech Republic

Mr President,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Core Group of the resolution on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association – Indonesia, Lithuania, Maldives, Mexico, United States of America and my country Czech Republic.

The Core Group expresses its full support for your Mandate and your important work. The last year’s resolution, extending the Mandate for three more years, was adopted by this Council with a record support from all regions. This is, above all, a testimony of the Mandate’s importance and proves that there is a global support for the protection and promotion of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association.

Mr Special Rapporteur,

Thank you for your report and the addendums. We regret to hear that protesters and activists have been experiencing increased human rights violations just for exercising their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association. Impunity for such violations leads to further repression, prevents societies from tackling crises and undermines the rule of law. We welcome your efforts to address this issue. You have mentioned practical steps aimed at ensuring accountability for those violations. What could be the Council’s contribution in this regard?

Thank you.
