Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur on Migrants

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

Delivered by Ms. Kelly Billingsley, Deputy Permanent Representative, U.S. Delegation

Human Rights Council – 53rd Session

Thank you, Mr. President, and thank you, Mr. Special Rapporteur.

The United States appreciates your work and analysis during your time as mandate holder.

Migrants play an important role in the global economy.  They contribute to innovation, economic development, and poverty reduction.  They enrich the cultures and the economies of their new homes.

The United States welcomed the first International Migration Review Forum.  We look forward to working with regional and international partners to advance comprehensive and collaborative migration management that respects the human rights of migrants, consistent with the vision of the Global Compact for Migration.

We are expanding access to lawful pathways to the United States, including through refugee and parole processes that allow eligible migrants to apply for entry without making the dangerous journey to our border.

It is imperative that migrants, regardless of status and no matter their country of origin, are treated humanely and with dignity.

The United States appreciates your attention to migrants in situations of vulnerability.  We hope that you might also be able to address the impacts of climate change on migration.

What suggestions do you have on facilitating orderly, safe, regular, and responsible migration and mobility of people?

I thank you.
