Interactive Dialogue with the Fact-Finding Mission on Venezuela

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

As Delivered by Ms. Branka Bell

Human Rights Council – 52nd Session

Thank you, Mr. President.

On behalf of the United States, I want to thank the members of the Fact-Finding Mission for your ongoing efforts to document human rights abuses in Venezuela.

In its September 2022 report, the Mission noted the continued spiraling of humanitarian, social, economic, and human rights conditions, coupled with a breakdown of State institutions, which have led to more than six million people fleeing the country.

We have witnessed this regime continue its intimidation and harassment of journalists, media outlets, human rights defenders, humanitarian workers, religious actors, union leaders, and members or supporters of the opposition and their relatives.

We believe a peaceful and lasting solution to this crisis can best be achieved through Venezuelan-led, comprehensive negotiations that lead to free and fair elections, the restoration of Venezuela’s independent institutions, and respect for the rule of law.

What actions can the international community take to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Venezuela and promote accountability for human right abuses?

I thank you.
