U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Argentina
42nd Session
Delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor
Thank you, Mr. President. That was the first of many times I expect I will address you in that way. So welcome!
The United States welcomes the delegation of Argentina and congratulates Argentina and Ambassador Villegas on the successful presidency and strong leadership of the Human Rights Council last year.
We commend Argentina on its continuing efforts to address hundreds of criminal cases related to atrocities committed under the military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983.
In the spirit of constructive cooperation, we recommend that Argentina:
-
Appoint a head of the Office of the Ombudsman to ensure it will document and investigate government misconduct and protect human rights, including women’s access to their human rights.
-
Improve conditions at penitentiaries by addressing instances of overcrowding, poor medical care, and unsanitary conditions.
-
Pass a national law on Indigenous communal ownership of traditional lands.
We wish Argentina a successful UPR. I thank you.
