 Intersessional Interactive Dialogue on Nicaragua

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

As Delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor

 UN Human Rights Council

Thank you, Mr. President.

Thank you to the High Commissioner and the group of Human Rights Experts for your important work reporting on the ongoing deteriorating human rights situation in Nicaragua.

The continued escalation of human rights violations and abuses in Nicaragua is cause for great concern and I am grateful that we are able to hold this dialogue at the Human Rights Council. The list of concerns includes serious violations of civil and political rights, the regime’s refusal to engage in a national dialogue, and its self-isolation from the international community.

We urge the immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners and those who continue to be arbitrarily detained.  We call on the regime to cease its assault on peaceful opposition, independent media, academia, human rights defenders, journalists, and religious actors.

We urge Nicaragua to re-engage with the Organization of American States and OHCHR immediately to address existing human rights concerns and put in place conditions necessary for a return to democracy and rule of law.

Question: In the interest of constructive engagement, I would love to know how the international community can further support the group of Human Rights Experts toward the goal of improving the Human Rights situation in Nicaragua?

I thank you.
