UPR 41st Session
U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Brazil
As Delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor
41st Session, November 14, 2022
Thank you, Mr. President
The United States welcomes the distinguished Brazilian delegation and we thank you for your report.
In the spirit of constructive engagement, we recommend that Brazil:
- Adopt additional measures to improve the protection of women and girls in all their diversity, Indigenous persons, LGBTQI+ persons, journalists, human rights defenders, including environmental defenders, Afro-Brazilians, trade unionists, religious minorities, and persons with disabilities from violence and reprisal for exercising their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and religion or belief.
- Conduct thorough, impartial, and timely investigations into all allegations of unlawful killings, abuse, torture, and corruption involving security forces and prison personnel.
- In consultation with Indigenous Peoples and Afro-Brazilians, establish dialogues, programs, and measures that counter racism, prevent discrimination and violence, and promote ethnic and racial equality.
We wish Brazil a successful review and look forward to supporting their efforts to address their UPR recommendations. We also look forward to Brazil’s continued engagement as an observer state at the HRC. I thank you.
