UPR 41st Session
U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
41st Session
As delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States welcomes the distinguished delegation from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland led by Justice Minister Freer.
We commend the UK for its ongoing support for democracy and human rights within their country and around the world.
We recommend that the United Kingdom:
- Take continued, furthering steps to reverse the rising number of violent, and largely racially motivated, hate crimes and strengthen current policies and initiatives to combat societal discrimination against members of racial and ethnic minority groups.
- Take steps to ensure migrant workers are not left vulnerable to abuse and exploitation from employers and the UK visa system.
- Strengthen efforts to combat antisemitism and anti-Muslim sentiment by publicly denouncing hate speech and acts of violence at the highest levels of government and through policies and practices promoting religious freedom.
We wish the United Kingdom a successful UPR and look forward to continued close collaboration and partnership at the Human Rights Council and more broadly. I thank you.
