Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on Democratic Republic of the Congo

Statement as Delivered by Daniel Murphy

Delegation of the United States of America

Human Rights Council – 49th Session

March 29, 2022

Thank you, Madame Vice President. Thank you, Madam Deputy High commissioner, and team.

We express deep concern about reports of recent attacks against internally displaced civilians by the CODECO militia and attacks by ISIS-DRC and other militia groups.

We remain deeply concerned by reports of ongoing human rights violations by State security forces and military authorities, including extrajudicial killings, restrictions on freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and assaults on journalists. Those responsible for all abuses and violations of human rights must be held accountable.

The United States appreciates recent efforts by the government to evaluate the health of the media sector and discuss media reforms. We call for more meaningful action to improve press freedom and ensure protections of journalists and media workers.

Question: Madame Deputy High Commissioner, what can be done to better protect internally displaced civilians in eastern DRC?

I thank you.
