Interactive Dialogue on High Commissioner’s Report on Nicaragua
Statement As Delivered by Ambassador Michèle Taylor
Delegation of the United States of America
Human Rights Council, 49th Session
March 7, 2022
The United States thanks the High Commissioner for her review of the situation in Nicaragua.
The United States shares the concern that the Ortega-Murillo authorities continue to commit human rights abuses and unjust prosecutions of political opponents, journalists, and human rights defenders.
We urge the immediate, unconditional release of all political prisoners. Life- threatening conditions, denial of medical care, and sexual violence in detention are unacceptable. These deplorable, abusive conditions have already led to the death of one political prisoner this year.
The Ortega-Murillo authorities must cease their assault on Nicaragua’s peaceful opposition, independent media, and academia, including the recent forced closure of numerous nongovernmental organizations and independent universities.
In the wake of elections widely condemned as neither free nor fair, we urge Nicaragua to re-engage with the OAS and OHCHR to address existing human rights concerns and put in place conditions necessary for a return to democracy and rule of law.
Question: What steps are being taken to re-open dialogue with the Ortega-Murillo authorities and what additional mechanism might be needed to promote accountability and respect for human rights?
Thank you.
