Interactive Dialogue on the High Commissioner’s oral update on the Sudan
Human Rights Council – Geneva, Switzerland
March 7, 2022
Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America
As Delivered by Ambassador to the HRC Michèle Taylor
The United States welcomes the High Commissioner’s oral update. We condemn the military takeover, which upended the civilian-military partnership, and betrayed the Sudanese people’s desire for freedom, peace and justice.
We strongly support the efforts of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission to Sudan to facilitate a civilian-led political process to identify a way forward for Sudan’s democratic transition and to consider amendments to Sudan’s 2019 Constitutional Declaration.
The United States condemns the use of violence against activists and peaceful protesters, including gender-based violence, and the reported use of live ammunition. We call on the government to respect the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and to release those reported to be arbitrarily detained by security forces. We urge the government to facilitate a peaceful democratic transition.
We welcome the UN Expert on Human Rights in Sudan Adama Dieng’s first official visit to Sudan. We call on the Sudanese government to continue to cooperate with and facilitate Mr. Dieng’s work.
Our question is: What actions can we take to support and protect Sudanese protestors and civil activists?
Thank you.
