Statement by Ambassador Sheba Crocker
United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations
and other International Organizations in Geneva
The world has witnessed with horror an unprovoked attack on the people of Ukraine by Russian military forces. As Secretary General Guterres has rightfully noted, “use of force by one country against another is the repudiation of the principles that every country has committed to uphold.” High Commissioner for Human Rights Bachelet has likewise added her voice saying, “This military action clearly violates international law and puts at risk countless civilian lives.” Russian military aggression challenges the very foundations upon which the United Nations is constructed.
The United States will work in lockstep with our diplomatic and civil society partners to respond to Russia’s aggression and support the people of Ukraine. We will engage tirelessly with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Committee of the Red Cross, International Organization for Migration, and other humanitarian partners to respond to the human suffering, refugee flows, and internal displacement resulting from the invasion. We will work with our allies and partners on and off the Human Rights Council to ensure that Russia is held to account for its violations of international law.
The United States stands in solidarity with Ukraine.
