U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Trinidad and Tobago
U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Trinidad and Tobago
39th Session
As Delivered by Mr. Jesse Lynch
The United States welcomes the delegation from Trinidad and Tobago.
We recommend Trinidad and Tobago:
- Investigate reports of arbitrary or unlawful killings and human trafficking by police and reports of excess use of force by prison guards and hold accountable any officers found to be responsible.
- Take concrete actions to curb corruption by creating transparent public procurement processes at all levels of government and investigating police officers who take or solicit bribes.
- Reform laws to strengthen protections against discrimination and gender-based violence including for LGBTQI+ persons, including by establishing a law criminalizing discrimination against LGBTQI+ individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.
We recognize the steps Trinidad and Tobago has taken to regularize the status of some Venezuelans. However, we continue to urge the GOTT to expand registration for all Venezuelans and allow them to reside, work and access emergency health services in the country.
Thank you.
