Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

Human Rights Council – 48th Session

Special Rapporteur Andrews, the United States supports your continued focus on the military junta’s brutal violence, and the impact of its response to the COVID pandemic on the enjoyment of human rights.

We call for an immediate cessation of violence, release of those unjustly detained, a return to the path of democracy, and justice and accountability for atrocities and abuses.

The United States condemns continuing violence against healthcare facilities and medical personnel, the targeting of journalists, and information access restrictions online and offline.  The people of Myanmar urgently need access to medical services and information to safeguard their health.  We urge all Member States to press the junta to immediately allow unhindered humanitarian access.

Question:  Special Rapporteur Andrews, what actions can we take to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Myanmar and improve access to information?
