Interactive Dialogue with the Independent Expert for Central African Republic

Statement by the United States of America
Human Rights Council 47th Session

As Delivered by Patrick Elliot, Human Rights Officer
July 9, 2021

We thank the Independent Expert for his update.

The United States is deeply troubled by reports of human rights violations by the Central African Armed Forces and of human rights abuses by Russian mercenaries in the country.

These abuses, and threats to UN peacekeepers and civilians, must cease immediately in order to prevent further cycles of violence, which have tragically plagued the Central African Republic. We urge external actors, including Russia and its surrogates, to focus on transparent security sector reform to support efforts to achieve peace and security in the Central African Republic.

The United States calls for accountability for all human rights abuses and violations in the Central African Republic, which is essential to build the lasting peace and security its people deserve.

What more can states do to promote accountability for human rights violations and abuses in the Central African Republic?  Thank you.
