Interactive Dialogue on High Commissioner’s Report on Venezuela

Statement by the United States of America
Human Rights Council, 47th Session

Geneva, July 5, 2021

As Delivered by Chargé d’Affaires Ben Moeling

Thank you, Madame High Commissioner, for the work you have done on the review of the situation in Venezuela.

The United States continues to support a negotiated solution to the Venezuela crisis that leads to free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections, with full political party participation, and a return of the rule of law and democracy in Venezuela.

We call for the unconditional release of all persons unjustly detained, continued support to the victims of abuses, the creation of an environment where all Venezuelans can chart a peaceful course out of the current crisis, with full respect for the freedoms of expression, association and peaceful assembly, and an end to attacks against human right defenders, journalists, and political opposition.

We are committed to working with partners and allies to provide humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Venezuelan people, and to implement appropriate sanctions including against corrupt regime officials who undermine democracy or abuse human rights.

Madame High Commissioner, how can we promote justice and accountability for the human rights violations and abuses committed by the illegitimate Maduro regime?
