UN Human Rights Council – 47th Session
Statement by the United States of America

As Delivered by Phillip Riblett
Geneva, June 23, 2021

Thank you, Special Rapporteur Mofokeng, for your report on your recent activities and your priorities over the coming years.

The United States is committed to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic globally. To support this commitment, we will provide 500 million safe and effective vaccine doses to the GAVI Alliance, with delivery starting in August 2021. We are also donating another 80 million vaccine doses from our supply, with delivery already underway. Additionally, we have contributed two billion dollars to COVAX, more than any other country—and support local production capacity abroad for safe and effective vaccines, including through the Quad initiative. These investments will pay long-term dividends in global health security and future pandemic response.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an intensified focus in the United States on the importance of increasing global health security, particularly strengthening capacities and sustainable financing for global preparedness.

What are your recommendations for the best ways to expand support for global health security activities to address health security threats moving forward?
