ITU Virtual Consultation of Councillors
June 9, 2021
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. Good morning, afternoon, and evening to the ITU Councillors, esteemed guests and colleagues.
On behalf of the United States, I would like to take this opportunity to announce our support for the candidacy of Doreen Bogdan-Martin for ITU Secretary General. I know some of you have known Doreen for many years through her time at the ITU, including most recently as Director of the BDT where she has been working to bridge the digital divide, and to forge new innovative partnerships and mobilize resources to support ICT development worldwide. Doreen uniquely combines deep knowledge of the ITU, a member-driven focus, uncompromising integrity, and a collaborative style that builds trusted relationships.
She is a proven forward-looking, inclusive leader and manager who cares deeply about this institution and the people in it.
If elected, Doreen would be the first woman to lead the ITU, and we think she is the right candidate at the right time to help take the Union into the future.
I’d also like to announce that the United States will run for re-election to one of the seats on the ITU Council from the Americas region. As a member of Council since it’s inception and as one of the largest financial donors to the ITU, the United States remains committed to the important work of the Union and collaborating with other ITU members. We would be honored to have your vote for this position.
Thank you and I wish everyone a successful meeting.
