U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Denmark
U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Denmark
38th session, May 6, 2021
As Delivered by Sean Mariano Garcia
The United States warmly welcomes the Danish delegation to the UPR working group.
We recommend that Denmark:
- Develop a National Human Rights Action Plan; adopt comprehensive legislation to combat discrimination, especially against members of religious and ethnic minority groups, women and girls, and LGBTQI+ persons; and end the official application of the term “ghetto” to immigrant communities.
- Ensure members of religious minority groups are guaranteed the right to freedom of religion or belief, including by repealing the ban on full face coverings in public places and permitting kosher and halal slaughter of animals.
- Continue the development of programs to combat the sexual abuse of children in Greenland.
We commend Denmark’s longstanding commitment to human rights. We welcome its new anti-discrimination protections for persons with disabilities, as well as its efforts to prevent sexual harassment and hate crimes.
