Interactive Dialogue with Independent Expert on the Human Rights Situation in Mali
Alioune Tine

46th Session of the Human Rights Council
March 22, 2021

As Delivered by Sean Mariano Garcia

Thank you, Independent Expert, for your presentation.

The United States remains deeply concerned by continuing insecurity and human rights abuses by violent extremists, self-defense groups, and security forces in central and northern Mali.

The lack of progress on prosecutions of alleged perpetrators of human rights violations and abuses over the last two years – including in the security forces – contributes to a troubling culture of impunity which is fueling violence.

We call on the transitional government to demonstrate the political will and dedicate resources to follow through on its public commitments to hold accountable all individuals responsible for human rights violations and abuses, just as it must honor its commitment to hold elections by April 2022.

Independent Expert, how can MINUSMA strengthen existing efforts to document alleged human rights violations and abuses, and identify perpetrators in support of accountability and prosecutorial efforts?
