U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Croatia
36th Session, November 10, 2020
Read by Meryn Schneiderhan
The United States recommends that Croatia:
1. Immediately investigate all reports of attacks, threats, and harassment against media professionals, including online threats and harassment.
2. Ensure border police are provided with guidance in line with international law and that all reports of improper uses of force at the border are thoroughly and transparently investigated and prosecuted as appropriate.
3. Condemn historical revisionism, discrimination, and hate speech at the highest levels, particularly against Roma, Serbs, and members of other minority communities, at every available opportunity. In order to supplement national Roma inclusion efforts, the government should invest in capacity-building for Roma civil society groups so that they are empowered to represent their own interests.
We urge the Croatian government to promote religious tolerance and ensure no religious discrimination and harassment against minority religious groups.
