U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Grenada
As delivered by Sean Garcia
The United States welcomes the Grenadian delegation to the UPR working group.
We recommend that Grenada:
- Decriminalize LGBTI status and conduct by repealing Article 431 of the criminal code.
- Amend Article 32 of the Employment Act to expressly prohibit hazardous work for children and trafficking of children in all cases.
- Further protect children by amending the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act to make clear that an act can be considered trafficking even if it does not involve explicit threats, abuse of power, or other forms of coercion.
We acknowledge Grenada’s efforts to address a 2014 UPR recommendation made by the United States with the enactment of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act and encourage the Government to take the steps recommended to strengthen the law.
