U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Guinea
As delivered by Charles Bentley
The United States welcomes the Guinean delegation to the UPR Working Group.
We recommend that Guinea:
- Immediately conduct transparent investigations into and hold perpetrators accountable for the deaths of individuals killed during demonstrations in October and November 2019.
- Publicly announce a timeline to hold trials for those responsible for the 2009 Conakry stadium massacre and rape of more than 100 women and girls.
- Continue to work to ensure that all preparations for a free, fair, and transparent election, including the registration and verification of all eligible voters, are completed in time for the proposed February 16, 2020 election.
Impunity for state security actors who commit gross violations of human rights, including arbitrary killings and rape and other forms of gender-based violence, remains a serious problem in Guinea.
