U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of El Salvador
As delivered by Dan Kronenfeld
The United States welcomes the Salvadoran delegation to the UPR Working Group.
We recommend that El Salvador:
- Investigate and prosecute human rights violations and abuses by security forces and other government officials, including extrajudicial killings.
- Eliminate impunity, including for corruption and gang-related crime, and increase the budget of the Attorney General’s office for security force units handling such crimes.
- Accelerate implementation of transitional justice and provide adequate resources for crimes committed during the civil war, including the El Mozote massacre.
We commend El Salvador for holding free and fair presidential elections in February this year and for announcing a new international mechanism to combat impunity and corruption, but remain concerned by alarmingly high rates of violence, corruption, and impunity and legislative efforts in the past year to undermine accountability and transitional justice.
Thank you, Mr. Vice President.
