U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Yemen
32ndSession
Geneva, January 23, 2019
as delivered by Jason Mack
The United States welcomes the delegation from the Republic of Yemen Government.
We commend the Government of Yemen’s ongoing support of UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths as he brings parties together to forge a political agreement to end the suffering of the Yemeni people.
- We recommend that Yemen:Continue to work towards a sustainable political solution to the conflict that includes a broad cross-section of Yemeni society, especially women, youth, and tribal, regional, and religious leaders.
- Safeguard the ability of human rights defenders, both domestic and international, including journalists, to enter the country, have unhindered access, and operate without reprisal.
- Bring detention centers under unified, national government control, prevent abuse of detainees, and allow for investigations and prosecution of allegations of abuse.
The Government should also address the unlawful recruitment and use of child soldiers by government-affiliated militias and create alternative vocational or economic opportunities for Yemeni youth.
