U.S. Statement at the Universal Periodic Review of Israel
As delivered by Jason Mack
29th Session of the Human Rights Council’s UPR
Geneva, January 23, 2018
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States warmly welcomes the Director General of the Ministry of Justice and the Israeli delegation to the UPR Working Group.
We note Israel’s continued commitment to its democratic traditions and values, its free elections, and its open society. Would the government consider the following in terms of what could be done to:
- Continue to afford and enhance the opportunity of all components of society, regardless of political or ideological affiliation, to have an effective voice in civil affairs?
- Work to minimize the number and duration of administrative detention orders, and ensure any detainee through counsel can effectively challenge the legal basis for detention in court?
- Provide additional resources to Arab Israeli and Bedouin communities to improve their access to education, land and housing, healthcare, and employment?
Thank you.
