As delivered by Jason Mack
Delegation of the United States of America

28th Session,
Geneva, November 15, 2017

Thank you Mr. Vice President.

The United States warmly welcomes the Sri Lankan delegation to the UPR Working Group.

We commend Sri Lanka’s commitment to promoting reconciliation, accountability, and human rights, and welcome progress on returning occupied lands and operationalizing the Office of Missing Persons.  We encourage the Government of Sri Lanka to take additional steps to fully implement its commitments.

We are concerned by reports of ongoing abuses by members of the security forces, and by reports of increased violence against members of religious minority communities.

Bearing in mind these concerns, we recommend that Sri Lanka:

  1. Fully implement the commitments agreed to in HRC Resolution 30/1.
  2. Hold security forces and government officials accountable for human rights violations and abuses.
  3. Hold accountable perpetrators of harassment and violence against members of religious minority communities.

Thank you Mr. Vice President.
