Universal Periodic Review 27th Session

May 3, 2017

Thank you Mr. Vice President. The United States warmly welcomes the Indonesia delegation.

We commend Indonesia for its work to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as steps taken to combat corruption and to promote good governance.

We recommend that Indonesia:

  1. End prosecutions under Articles 156 and 156a of the criminal code for exercising freedom of religion and expression.
  1. End prosecutions under Articles 106 and 110 of the criminal code for exercising freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
  1. Thoroughly and transparently investigate past human rights abuses.

We note with concern the failure to publish and enforce a government-wide framework of accountability for abuses by the military and the police.

We also note the government’s failure to protect members of religious minority groups and the undue restrictions on their exercise of freedom of religion.

We are concerned by restrictions on the exercise of free speech and peaceful assembly, including in Papua and West Papua, where mass detentions of peaceful protesters and restrictions of local symbols have taken place.

Thank you Mr. Vice President.
