On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the Swiss government and people as you celebrate your National Day on August 1.

I have a deep appreciation for Switzerland over the years. The stunning scenery and welcoming manner of the Swiss people never fail to impress me. From my time as a student near Zurich to the many days I spent in Geneva in negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, I have valued the close bonds of friendship and cooperation between our countries.

The United States looks forward to strengthening our partnership and continuing to work together to support democracy, human rights, and economic development around the world. I am grateful for your assistance as our protecting power in Cuba and Iran and for supporting discussions aimed at tackling some of the most difficult global challenges.

On this joyous occasion, I wish all the Swiss people peace and prosperity in the years ahead.
