U.S. Statement on HRC 29 Burma Resolution
July 2, 2015
Thank you, Mr. President.
The United States thanks the Pakistan and Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries for introducing this important resolution. We join the OIC in co-sponsoring this resolution and condemn all human rights abuses and violations, particularly against members of ethnic and religious minorities, including Rohingya.
We thank governments in the region for their commitments to receive and protect migrants, work with international organizations to screen them for persecution and trafficking concerns, provide unrestricted access to humanitarian workers, and dismantle criminal networks. We urge these governments to implement those commitments.
Further, we urge the Myanmar government to create a path to full citizenship for stateless persons that does not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity or force applicants to identify as members of a group or nationality to which they do not believe they belong.
Thank you.
