Statement on the Death of Somali Ambassador Bari-Bari Statement by the Delegation of the U.S.A.
23rd Special Session of the Human Rights Council
Mr. President.
Along with many other delegations here, we were shocked and saddened to learn of the brutal murder of Ambassador Bari-Bari at the hands of Al-Shabab terrorists. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Ambassador Bari-Bari’s family, the other victims of the attack in Mogadishu, and to the people of Somalia.
Ambassador Bari-Bari was a foundation in the diplomatic corps in Geneva. He was a close partner and friend to all of us and he played an outsize role within this Council on numerous human rights issues.
One could not meet Yusuf without being struck by his kindness, his compassion, and his unrelenting commitment to the promotion of human rights for all.
As we gather today to draw attention to the brutal actions of Boko Haram, we must also remember that the scourge of terrorism strikes in every part of our world and that the international community must continue to work together to bring an end to it.
Thank you.
