General Comment: A/HRC/26/L.12 on Discrimination Against Women

Statement by the Delegation of the United States of America

UN Human Rights Council – 26th Session

Delivered by Candace Bates

Geneva, June 26, 2014

 Thank you, Mr. President.

The United States is pleased to co-sponsor this resolution on eliminating discrimination against women and the work of the Working Group dedicated to this important cause.

The United States strongly supports this resolution’s call to end gender discrimination and to promote women’s participation in all spheres of life.

This resolution urges states to take many actions to further these goals.

We understand that the resolution only urges a state to use quotas when it thinks it is appropriate to do so.

Thank you.
