U.S. Statement on draft resolution [A/HRC/25/L. 21] on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

The United States is pleased to co-sponsor this resolution [A/HRC/25/L. 21] on the situation of human rights in Myanmar.  We recognize and reaffirm our support for the significant positive developments in Myanmar and the commitment of its government to political and economic reform, democratization, national reconciliation and the promotion and protection of human rights.

Nevertheless, further to OP 10 in this resolution on the situation in Rakhine state, we are deeply concerned by the recent mob violence in Sittwe targeting UN offices and international NGOs, which has resulted in the destruction of property and the emergency relocation of international aid workers, including American citizens, to safe havens.  We call on the government to hold accountable those who committed this violence, to prevent the outbreak of future violence and to protect aid workers, their offices, and other vulnerable populations in the area.   It is long overdue for the government to take the decisive action necessary to prevent these acts, address the core problems in Rakhine state,  including the continued lack of adequate security forces and rule of law on the ground, and create the conditions for sustainable peace and development.

Thank you, Mr. President.
