“Promoting Human Rights Through Sport and the Olympic Ideal”

General Statement

Statement of the Delegation of the United States of America
UN Human Rights Council – 24th Session

Geneva,
September 26, 2013

The United States is pleased to cosponsor on the resolution entitled “Promoting Human Rights Through Sport and the Olympic Ideal.”  We especially want to draw attention to the recognition in the resolution regarding “sport as a universal language that contributes to educating people on the values of respect, diversity, tolerance and fairness and as a means to combat all forms of discrimination and promote social inclusion for all.”  The phrase ‘for all’ is a central concept here and encompasses members of the many groups that benefit from sport, including those of differing sexual orientations and gender identities.

Part of what makes sport so important is that it promotes inclusion , bringing together people of different age, race, religion, social status, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity, by way of  example.  Sport crosses all segments of society and is instrumental in empowering people of diverse backgrounds and identities, while fostering tolerance and respect for all people, no matter what they look like, where they worship, or whom they love.

Thank you Mister President.
