U.S. Department of State Launches “2013 Innovation in Arms Control Challenge”

U.S. Department of State
Washington, DC
July 22, 2013

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Arms Control, Verification and Compliance launched today the “2013 Innovation in Arms Control Challenge” where we ask the public, “What Information Technology Tools and Concepts Can Support Future Arms Control Inspections?”  Click here for official rules and guidelines.

In the future, our current inspection methods and capabilities may be bolstered by new inspection tools and processes.  These might supplement or even replace current technical approaches dating back to the Cold War with modern methods that capture the potential of an era characterized by powerful mobile devices and easy information sharing.

As with our first Innovation in Arms Control Challenge, we are seeking new, innovative ideas from the general public to heighten awareness on the topic of arms control and to engage the larger community including students, technologists, inventors and educators, to participate and become part of the solution.

The contest runs until October 20, 2013 and is open to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The Challenge award will be contingent on theoretical evaluation of the proposal with the reservation of right to award only the solution which is most likely to be successfully and cost-effectively implemented.  The total prize amount will not exceed $10,000.
