President Obama believes the United Nations can be extraordinarily constructive and an important partner in bringing peace, stability and security to the world. The bedrock of international cooperation must be a community of states committed to solving collective problems, the president says.
Representatives from 50 nations met in San Francisco on April 25, 1945, to draw up the United Nations Charter. The charter calls for an end to war, reaffirms faith in fundamental human rights, calls for the equal rights for men and women and of all nations, establishes conditions for justice and respect for the obligations of treaties and international law, and promotes social progress and better standards of life and freedom.
