May 4, 2011

The United States warmly welcomes His Excellency Mr. Ronny James Govinden and the entire Seychellois delegation to the UPR Working Group. We appreciate the challenges the UPR process poses for smaller states and we commend Seychelles for its committed participation. We have carefully reviewed the report and closely followed today’s presentation, and would like to offer the following observations and recommendations.

We applaud Seychelles’ steady improvement of the protection of civil and political rights, including freedom of assembly and association. We encourage Seychelles to continue to institutionalize respect for these basic political rights.

We commend Seychelles for its progress on addressing prison conditions and the treatment of detainees. Humane treatment of detainees, including the provision of adequate facilities, shows a respect for the basic rights of all people, even those suspected or convicted of crimes.
