From July 18 to 23, Ambassador Eric Goosby, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, will lead the U.S. delegation to the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria. The conference brings together an estimated 25,000 participants, including scientists, health care providers, political, community and business leaders, government, non-governmental and multilateral organization representatives, and people living with HIV/AIDS, to discuss efforts to stop HIV/AIDS. Reflecting America’s leadership in the fight against global AIDS through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the U.S. will use this opportunity to share data, best practices, and lessons learned from PEPFAR-supported programs with the global community of HIV/AIDS program implementers.

On Sunday, July 18, PEPFAR will host two satellite symposia at the conference. “Advancing Country Ownership: Achieving Program Sustainability and Long-Term Impact,” will reflect PEPFAR’s central focus on increasing country ownership in HIV strategy, program design and implementation. During the session presenters from partner country governments, multilateral organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector will discuss common threads for action toward increased country ownership. This session will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Central Europe Summer Time (CEST). From 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. CEST, PEPFAR will also host a satellite symposium on “Gender Programming and Practices: Practical Approaches for Integration with HIV/AIDS.” This session will focus on the U.S. Government’s strategy to address gender issues within PEPFAR. Both sessions are open to the press, and will take place in the Reed Messe Wein Conference Center, Mini Room 8.
