Remarks by the Delegation of the United States of America

UPR of Comoros

May 13, 2009
Thank you, Mr. President.

The United States thanks the government of Comoros for its engagement in this UPR process and to the delegation for its presentation today. We would like to offer the following question and recommendation.

First, our question. What measures has the Government of Comoros put into place to combat corruption?

Second, our recommendation. The United States recommends that the Comoros implement a system of budget monitoring, accountability, and transparency for each of the three islands and the Union government as a whole. In addition, the U.S. recommends implementation of a public information campaign alerting citizens of their rights, and the laws governing the role and actions of government officials with regard to corruption.

We hope you find this UPR process helpful and thank you in advance for your response.

Thank you, Mr. President.

UPR of Slovakia

May 13, 2009

Thank you, Mr. President.

The United States thanks the Government of Slovakia and its delegation for its engagement with the UPR process and its presentation today. We would like to offer the following questions and recommendations.

First, given continuing reports of police mistreatment of Romani suspects, including recent reports of abuses of six Romani minors in Kosice while in police custody, how does the Government of Slovakia plan to address the problem?

The United States recommends that the Government of Slovakia conduct a thorough criminal investigation and prosecution of the police officers involved in the abuse in Kosice. The United States also recommends that the Government of Slovakia implement a systematic plan to train police on human rights, and implement tolerance building programs.

Second, how has the Government of Slovakia addressed the OSCE’s concerns about the media law, which has now been in effect for one year, and what is the status of freedom of expression for members of the press currently?

The United States recommends that the Government of Slovakia work with the OSCE on implementation of recommendations to address concerns about the limits that the media law places on freedom of expression.

Thank you to the delegation of Slovakia and to you, Mr. President.
