State Department Refugee Officer Melissa Pitotti participated in the March 2009 United Nations donor mission to the Sahrawi refugee camps in western Algeria. The visit highlighted the severe living conditions facing a population that has lived in exile for the last 33 years.
The U.S. Government has long provided humanitarian assistance to the Sahrawi refugees by supporting the work of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Program (WFP). In Fiscal Year 2008, the USG provided UNHCR $1.65 million and gave WFP $1 million in cash plus $6.8 million in food commodities for this population.
