Ambassador Kevin E. Moley
U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations
and other International Organizations in Geneva
Statement at the 36th Joint Advisory Group
of the International Trade Center
April 28, 2003
The United States of America appreciates the work of the International
Trade Center in turning Geneva policy work into opportunities
for people in developing countries to use trade to expand economic
growth. With its grass-roots focus, the ITC empowers people by
giving them the tools to access wider markets.
Trade is essential in pursuing sustainable development. Trade
creates jobs and gives citizens access to higher quality goods
at a lower cost. The participation of developing countries in
the international trading system is essential for them and for
the good health of the system itself.
But trade does not just happen. It may arise when productive
capacity and technology are in place -- and it depends on favorable
institutional arrangements in government and finance.
My government particularly appreciates the initiative and private-sector
focus of the ITC - both in the way that you approach your work,
and in the partners you select in developing countries.
The United States has just contributed $500,000 to the ITC to
fund developing country access to the Interactive TradeMap project.
This project will help entrepreneurs in developing countries to
identify new markets and potential exports.
Free and open trade applies the power of markets to meeting the
needs of the poor. The United States congratulates Mr. Belisle
on his fine record and reappointment as Executive Director and
encourages him and his team to continue their efforts.
