U.S. Contributes $16.9 million to UN High Commissioner for Refugees

The United States is pleased to announce an additional contribution of $16.9 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, bringing the United States' contribution for FY2002 to over $255 million.

These additional funds will support the Refugee Agency's operations in Africa, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. Nearly $5 million is being provided in support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' activities on behalf of refugee children and refugee women.

The protection of refugee children and refugee women and the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence are key priorities. The United States is working with all the humanitarian agencies it funds to ensure that steps are taken to prevent further abuse.

Other funds support UN High Commissioner for Refugees environmental activities and its HIV/AIDS prevention programs.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees provides protection and assistance, and seeks durable solutions for approximately 21 million refugees and other persons of concern. The United States is a strong supporter of the agency, and is its largest donor.
