The United States will contribute $1,000,000 to the World Food Program's (WFP) emergency appeal for food distribution to Bhutanese Refugees in Nepal. The United States has asked the WFP to ensure that the funds are used for core activities "that assist the most vulnerable members of the refugee population." Funds made available through this contribution were provided by the State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration. The United States has long been a major contributor, through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Program, to the humanitarian needs of the nearly 100,000 persons from Bhutan claiming refugee status in Nepal. The Department of State has welcomed recent agreements between Nepal and Bhutan to work towards resolving the refugee issue fully and fairly.
