Statement by U.S. Ambassador Rita D. Hayes
Regarding Croatia's WTO Accession
July 18, 2000

The delegation of Croatia should be applauded for the quality of its accession package. The United States believes that a predictable and stable trade regime will advance reform efforts designed to increase the living standards of Croatian citizens. Improved economic conditions will help cement the successes achieved in the area of regional peace and security.

The WTO as an institution will also benefit from the participation of another country that is making the difficult transition to a market economy. We believe WTO accession will advance Croatia's transition to a market-based economy which is well equipped to compete in global markets. We congratulate Croatia on the success of this negotiation and look forward to working with Croatia as a WTO member.
