U.S. Contributes $20 million to the Joint United Nations Appeal for Iraqi Refugee Health Programs

U.S. Department of State
Office of the Spokesman
Washington, DC
January 17, 2008

We are pleased to announce a contribution of $20 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) for their joint $84.8 million September 2007 appeal to meet the health needs of Iraqis displaced in neighboring countries. This contribution will provide urgently needed medical assistance to Iraqi refugees in Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.

The UN’s health appeal will expand primary health access by hiring additional health care personnel, purchasing medicines and supplies, expanding health education, and assisting national health authorities to strengthen their information and disease surveillance systems. The activities will support not only national health institutions, but also national Red Crescent societies and local partners.
