STATEMENT OF THE UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE, PETER ALLGEIER
WELCOMING THE WTO ACCESSION OF UKRAINE

Geneva,
February 5, 2008

We take enormous pleasure in approving Ukraine’s accession package and inviting it to join us in the World Trade Organization.  We are honored by the presence of President Yushchenko.  Mr. President, we would like to say “vee-tai-you” to you and your delegation.

We are proud that our delegation provided the first Chairman for Ukraine's Working Party, Andy Stoler. We were pleased to provide extensive technical assistance in the negotiating process.  But our enthusiasm today is based on the accomplishments of Ukraine itself.

As Working Party Chairman Ambassador Matus pointed out, Ukraine’s terms of accession are exceptional, and should be the cause of much pride on its part.   As Working Party Chairman, Ambassador Matus pointed out, Ukraine’s accession commitments should be an inspiration  -- and challenge – for all of us, to meet the standard of openness that you have embraced.  These commitments demonstrate Ukraine’s firm determination to embrace WTO provisions, and establish a trade regime based on rules and principles that encourage trade and investment.

We commend the Ukrainian WTO delegation for its hard work and exceptional achievement.  We look forward to working with Ukraine when it becomes a WTO Member to continue work in that direction.
