| USAID to
Help North Koreans Affected by Floods
USAID - August 16, 2007
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Acting Administrator of the United States
Agency for International Development Henrietta Fore today authorized
$100,000 in United States government humanitarian aid to help respond
to the severe destructive impact of recent floods in the Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). Two U.S. non-governmental
organizations, Mercy Corps and Samaritan’s Purse, will each
receive $50,000 to provide blankets, shelter materials, water containers
and other supplies to those in need.
We extend our deep sympathy to those who have suffered the loss
of their homes or loved ones as a result of the floods. These two
NGOs have responded to previous humanitarian emergencies in the
DPRK and elsewhere in the world, and we are confident that they
will ensure this assistance reaches those most affected by the floods.
Press and international relief agency reports indicate that casualties
and damage to arable land in North Korea may be extensive. As we
receive further details about the extent of the damage, we will
continue to consider how we can best assist the people of North
Korea during this difficult time.
